Earlier this month, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) announced that they have commissioned a study into the causes of large tractor-trailer crashes. A spokesperson for the organization announced that they expect their research to yield new data that will allow them to come up with new guidelines to enforce to make the roadways safer in the future.
The FMCSA last performed a similar study back in 2003. It was then that the federal agency reviewed the details surrounding 120,000 crashes involving tractor-trailers. FMCSA’s spokesperson noted that a lot has changed in the decade-and-a-half since the last study was conducted. That representative noted that driver behavior, roadway design, vehicle safety and technology have all changed significantly during that time. The spokesperson noted that they suspect that all this has affected how motorists operate their cars and trucks.
An FMCSA spokesperson noted that they’ll be paying particularly close attention safety equipment enhancements that trucks come equipped with nowadays to see how that’s helping curb crash rates. The spokesperson also pointed out that they’ll be delving a bit deeper into truckers’ use of safety restraints as well as distractions from in-cab navigation systems and texting.
The FMCSA spokesperson notes that they expect new policy recommendations to emerge after this research is said and done. One key result may be the emergence of a new automated driving technology program. This type of system may allow regulators to keep track of truckers’ problem behaviors and provide them with a way to keep them operating their trucks more safely in the future.
